| How do I prepare the saw for painting? | | First..Paint and Rust do not mix..If you are going to put all that time on painting the saw..make sure the paint will last. Rust comes right through the acrylics and the oils. They have to be cleaned down to the bare metal..sand paper and lots of elbow grease..or a husband like mine..who used an Angle Grinder. (Now here I must put in a ad for my 9 inch saw blades and my Miniature Saw Blades...No cleaning..Made of galvanized metal..Ready to Paint.)
After all the rust is gone..seal them with any color enamel paint you like. We use the Spray Enamel (The $1 a can works just as good as the expensive spray.) It is best to do both sides. I like to paint on black or gray. | | Do you put a sealer over your paints? | | YES!! I use MINWAX Polyurethane Spray..Satin on my scenery pictures and Gloss on my Agates. | | If you have a question for me????? | | If you read the About Us Page..I explained that I am going to be teaching Painting On Saw Blades. It does take sometime to get all this together and I am still taking orders on my site so sometimes I don't know if I'm coming or going. I have had lots of requests for Patterns and will be offering those as well as DVD's and Videos. If you have a question...you can hit the contact button or email me at LINDA@MOUNTAINCRAFTS.NET I welcome any ideas or would love to hear what you would like to see me paint. I will be posting more questions and answers...example..What paint I use..and the Colors. So check back often...Thanks Linda | | My first question comes from Chrissy in New Zealand..What Paints do I use?? | | (Her Ouestion).. Hi Linda, I have two hand saws undercoated and ready to paint (I hope
and am now ready to buy my paints. You say you paint with oils. Being a
beginner painter are they easier to paint with than acrylic or do they
produce a better finish? What are the pros and cons of acrylic paints?
Are there any paint brushes that are better than others? One saw I have
spray painted matt black and the other is a more glossy grey. Are they
both alright to paint on to or should I repaint one to either matt or more
glossy? (MY ANSWER)
HI Chrissy...Sounds like you are ready to go..I have tried acrylics..but
they dry so fast..And if you look at the number of items I paint..I never do
one at a time...Even in the beginning I liked playing with the oils. I do
use Grumbachers..COBALT DRIER...no other drier works!
You only use a tiny bit..to much will turn your oils yellow. I dip my brush
(just the tip) and then mix it with the paint. Now I use grumbacher
oils...Cobalt Blue for my summer skys and Thalo Green ...Yellow
light..Paynes Grey..Ultramarine Blue for my Winter scenery..Thalo Rose and
Paynes grey for my mauve winter scenery.
Burnt Umber..Raw Seinna..and White..I like the soft white..It spreads so
smooth...Lets see..These are my main colors...I use a small amount of the
reds..but they are necessary for flowers and of course red barns..
Now you can get all these in acrylics and do the opposite...get a paint
retarder...that keeps them from drying so fast.
For the brushes
1/2 in. Flat
1/4 in. flat
Fan brush..White Bristles..Size 4
and a liner..I use size 0.
Everything on my site is done with those 4 brushes.
One other thing I do since I paint with oils...After I clean as much paint
out as I can I dip them in baby oils so that any oil left in them will not
dry...just remember to clean them good in the paint thinner the next time
you paint. Will think of more later....I think its great you tried two
different surfaces...Let me know which you liked the best...Linda | | Painting Sky's |
